Over the years, I have developed a love for landscape and editorial work, but my passion has never ceased to be for the simple portrait. I first became interested in photography because it was a way to meaningfully interact with many kinds of different people, and so when I find myself needing to recharge or refocus my work, I return to the studio to catalog faces. It’s relaxing. My standard kit is normally two bodies and four lenses: 21mm, 35mm, 50mm 90mm. Almost as a rule, no matter what my subject, I rarely stray far from the 35 - 50mm focal range. I only even include the 21 and 90 lenses simply as insurance - for those very rare times when circumstance calls for a break in tradition. But the AF-S NIKKOR 24 - 70mm f/2.8E ED VR takes all of those lenses out of my kit, combining them into one complete, everything-and-the-kitchen-sink package. It is perfect in almost every way - almost to distraction. The lens itself is imposing - pleasantly heavy in hand and solidly built. It feels as well-engineered as it performs. This is clearly one of Nikon’s absolute best ever, and one of the single most useful lenses any photographer could have. One other thing of note - this lens is the first of its focal range with image stabilizing technology. I normally turn off the image stabilization tech when using a lens for stills, as I find it somewhat distracting. Not so with the AF-S NIKKOR 24 - 70mm f/2.8E ED VR. With its help, I am able to hand-hold the lens even at a half second and still get a decent exposure. Hand-held at 1/2 a second on an SLR. Insane! The one and only thing I can hold against this lens is that it is not fully backwards compatible with my trusty Nikon F4 (unless shooting strictly at f/2.8 is not a problem, of course). What a joy it would be to use this lens with film!
